Discussion: Reducing the divide

The advantages of bridging the gap in the global digital divide is that, more and more people will be able to access the internet, less and less people will be illiterate because technology can be used to help people learn to read and write. Also there will be a lot more jobs for people in the worlds due to the internet, telecoms ect. The advantages for the poorest nations are that they will get more money, there will be more jobs available and the country will earn more money due to this. Clinton was incorrect, matching internet and telephone levels will not help to reduce income equality because there will be a higher rate of income equality because there is more communications available to the people in the world. Charities such as computer aid do better than harm because they are collecting money to help buy computers for people all over the world to help them with illiterately, the computers mostly go to countries that are less economically developed.

Investigate the impact of access to telecoms

Comparing telecoms between, Central African Republic, Costa Rica, Singapore, Vietnam and the UK.

Central Afican Republic;

Population: 4,444,330
Telephones-land lines: 12,000
Mobile/cellular: 130,000
Telephone system: 1 per 100 people
Radio brodcast stations: AM 1, FM 5, Shortwave 1
Country code: 236
Internet country code: .cf
Internet hosts: 21
Internet Users: 13,000

Costa Rica;

Population: 4,195,914
Telephones-land lines: 1.437 million
Mobile/cellular: 1.503 million
Telephone system: good domestice telephone service
Radio brodcast stations: AM 65, FM 51, Shortwave 19
Country code: 506
Internet country code: .cr
Internet hosts: 16,440
Internet Users: 1.5million

Sinapore;

Population: 4,608,167
Telephones-land lines: 1.859 million
Mobile/cellular: 5.619 million
Telephone system: excelent service
Radio brodcast stations: Am 0, FM 17, Shortwave 2
Country code: 65
Internet country code: .sg
Internet hosts: 837,559
Internet Users: 3.105 million

Vietnam;

Population: 86,116,560
Telephones-land lines: 10.8 million
Mobile/cellular: 33.2 million
Telephone system: good general assement
Radio brodcast stations: AM 65, FM7, shortwave 29
Country code: 84
Internet country code: .vn
Internet hosts: 106,772
Internet Users: 17.87 million

UK;

Population: 60,943,912
Telephones-land lines: 33.682 million
Mobile/cellular: 71.992 million
Telephone system: technoligy advanced
Radio brodcast stations: AM 219, FM 413, Shortwave 3
Country code: 44
Internet country code: .uk
Internet hosts: 5.118 million
Internet Users: 40.2 million

The UK has a much more advanced technoligy compared to the other countries, due to these other countries not being a very wealthy country, the country also not able to get hold of the resources needed to have more internet hosts, telephone connections etc.

What leads to being on the wrong side of the divide

Niger, Chad, Mali, Guinea Biseau and Burkino Fasso are the least digitally developed countries, they may be on the wrong side of the digital divide because, these countries are not particularly wealthy which means that these countries do not have the money to spend on the technology. Niger is also a landlocked country in north Africa which means it is very hard to get ntew technology to the country because it has no access by sea.

Discussion society and the individual

We should allow society to 'look after us' to the extent that we still have our freedom, we should not be controlled on what we do each day so society can 'look after us'. Our individual freedom should still count and matter, society should not be taking away our own individual freedom to 'look after us'. Our freedom should not be deprived, but we should allow society to 'look after us' by looking through databases and using technology to find things that could harm us/the society.

Case study- Monitoring internet and email use

The advantages of content monitoring in an estate agency is the managers can tell if employees are wasting time on the computers during working hours e.g. going on games ect also it can track down the source of a virus if any viruses are found on the computer.

The negative impacts of this method of monitoring is that the employees might feel entrusted with what they are doing on the computers and could want to leave, also content monitoring may make employees feel like they are being constantly watched by there managers making them feel uncomfortable and make them feel insecure.

The advantages it has for employees is that it can protect them from any websites that could be a threat to the them and stops them from being in any danger from viruses, also the employees will not be dragged into any inappropriate websites because the content monitoring is stopping any bad websites from being viewed on the computer.

The system can cause problems if the system is only used for business purposes because the system will not allow the computers to be used for any thing else that strictly business purposes, the system could see business purposes as something different than the users.

The system should be used but also it should be monitored by someone at the same time to make sure the system is running well and not sending reports to the managers by accident.

Teen Arrive Alive GPS tracking system

The benefits of using a this new technology is that the parents can be sure were there child is anytime they want to check up on them, also this technology can help the emergency services if on the GPS it says that they have had a crash then the parents can contact the emergency services. The drawbacks to having this is that there daughters and sons may think that this technology is invading there privacy, also the GPS could fail and not work or have a technical fault making the GPS show something that is not happening.

Discussion US passports and RFID

These passports will save a lot of time but the dangers of this new technology are that there could be fake micro chips, which could cause people to have fake identities. Also the dangers are that the scanner could fail or not work properly which will make the ID checks slower and less convenient. Also the tags will only be inserted to 1 million passports not all the passports, which there will be no need for the scanners because only 1 million people will have them.

Investigate the pros and cons of ID cards

The government is proposing to have ID cards for anyone over 16 that is a UK resident; the ID cards will provide an easy and secure way for legal UK residents to prove who they are when they apply for services at private businesses, or for government benefits. The ID cards will be able to meet its purposes how it will be used for other things that are not part of its intended purpose. The advantages of having ID cards is that the cards can prove a persons identity and age which can be helpful, also the ID cards will no be will be easy to carry around and not be a huge risk if lost, were as if you use your passport or driving license as ID and lose it, it will be a bigger risk if lost. The disadvantages are that the ID cards may be violating a person’s privacy; also if the ID cards are successful then they may become compulsory when a lot of people may not want ID cards. I think ID cards should be aloud but only issued if people want them.

Managing information overload

Spreadsheets can keep a lot of information organised and stored together so not much information is overflowing. Simulation software can enable you to create a simulation on what would happen if you made certain decisions, so that if you run a simulation making a decision and you do not like the out come you can change you decision without changing all the information. Data mining tools can greatly help the organisation of data, mining tools can pick out relevent information from a large amount of information.

Making Choices

The mobile phone that I suggest for her would be the LG KP100 RUBY. I have choosen this phone because it is a cheap and easy phone to use. It has some modern features e.g. a colour screen, but is not to fancy. It is a good basic phone to do what a phone should do, it is £9.99 on T-Mobile Network pay-as-you-go.

Discussion Impact of game players

Computer games are so popular because, it is new technology making the games more and more in detail, making the graphics a lot better makes the games stand out more. Also younger people have free time to play so the new technique of playing games becomes more appealing to younger players. Computer games can and cannot make you more violent, if you do not understand the difference to being violent in life and violence in the game you are likeier to become more violent. If you do understand the difference between violence in games and violence in life then you are not going to become more violent. Computer games can make you more isolated because you can become more into games and less into having a social life. Networked computer games make you more social because you are communicating and playing with lots of people around the world.

Discussion Pirated entertainment

The advantage of paying a supplier such as Apple for legal music downloads is that you have legally downloaded the music so, you have the right to use the music without being accused of illegally downloading music. Also downloading from a supplier such as Apple you can trust what you are downloading is the correct thing and does not contain any viruses. The disadvantages of buying a pirated DVD from a market stall is that the DVD quality will be very bad, there might be people moving around and the sound could be bad. The disadvantages of getting a pirated copy of a new Hollywood blockbuster before its UK release is that, the DVD will not be able to work on any UK DVD player, also you are more likely to be caught for copyrighting. The disadvantage of visiting an illicit music download site is that you IP address could be noted by them which they can send you viruses and messages ect. Widespread of illicit downloading does discourage the funding of new talent because sales would go down due to illegal downloading, and new talent will not make as much money because of illegal downloading.

Discussion Access to original entertainment

Discussion-It has never been easier to publish original entertainment...

1. Original entertainment indeed never has been easier to publish, sites like www.youtube.com make it very easy for users to publish entertainment.
2. Sites that have blogs and writing walls make it very easy for users to publish entertainment such as images.
3. Entertainment is easily accessed by users because of how easy it is to publish it now.

Discussion- It has never been harder to see and hear original entertainment...

1. I disagree original entertainment can still be easily accessed, things such as radio ect can still be used online so it is easier to access original entertainment such as radio.
2. Also things like TV can be accessed online from a lot of sites so the original entertainment can be easily accessed.

Finding reliable, valid information

The websites i just viewed are all famous hoax websites, we can assess that the information displayed was incorrect because, the information my have spelling mistakes, limited evidence, photo shopped images, unheard of theory’s, a badly put together website, the information is not kept up to date and has very bad evidence to support there theory’s. The signs that should make us distrust a site is that the site may have incorrect spelling and doesn’t have very good evidence to support there evidence also things like spam and strange ad's may make you distrust a site.

Business communications

The main uses of VoIP is essentially a phone network that uses the Internet to transmit calls. This is one of the most modern business communications, the main uses for this form of communication is for things like insurance companies ect. The benefits of using this form of communication is that the information can be transferred very quickly from a phone network to internet to transmit calls. The draw backs are that the internet that this use of communication uses may not be a very good internet browser which means it could be slow or not work very well.

Evaluate your communications

The communication that I use is different for the different uses i want to use it for, I use email to send important files to other email accounts such as sending teachers course work. I use SMS and voice communication on my mobile phone to contact people instantly and to socialize. I use IM to socialize with my friends for instantly replies and I also use it to send files such as photos ect.
I best communication that I use is voice communication because it gives an instant reply rather than having to wait for them to log onto their account to check there emails or check there mobile phone for a text.

When do you use mobile phones?

The purposes that I use my mobile phone is, I use it to SMS text friends, to have conversations with friends and family, use it for its media e.g. MP3 player, camera, camcorder.
I use my mobile phone anywhere, I use it at home, when I am out ect. I use when ever I need to contact someone for some information or when I am contacted.
The major benefits of me using my mobile phone is that, my mobile phone can be used almost anywhere, my mobile phone can contact any number at anytime I want it to, my mobile phone does’ not just contact people but also can be used for entertainment, its extra applications such as alarm clock, calendar ect.
The major disadvantages of using a mobile phone is that it can only be used to contact people if it has good signal strength. Also the mobile phone battery is not a very long lasting battery and needs to be recharged every few days.
My mobile phone fulfils its intended purposes of being able to contact people I want it to, being able to use its alarm clocks, calendars ect.

When do you use e-mail?

What purposes do you use email?
The purposes that i use email for;
1.I use email to send important work files to people, also I use email to send important information to contacts that I do not have any other contact information.
2.I use email on any computer at home or at college, I use it by logging into an online internet account which then can enable me to send and receive emails.
3.The major benefits of using email is that email is very quick it will get to the contact email address very quickly. Also emails are free of charge to send.
4.The problems/disadvantages of using email is that email can only be used or accessed or used if you are connected to the internet. Also you can only send a email to someone if you have there email address.
5.Email makes you more productive when you have to send out important information and important files to other accounts.
6.Email makes you less productive because some people may not reply to the email instantly, where as with voice communication the person is instantly replying.
7.Emails fulfil its purposes by it being able to exchange information and files to other people and files.

Discussion Digital communication versus voice communication

Communcating with SMS in text language does have some social downsides compared to have a proper voice conversation, communicating with text language may confuse some people, because they may not understand your text language. Also using SMS it cannot show body langauge to what someone is saying, some body language cannot be read in SMS e.g. sarcasim cannot be as easily read in SMS than it would be in person.

There is social downsides in an e-mail body language can'not be read, rather in a short conversation body language is easily shown. Also not every person has e-mail account or may not always check their e-mail accounts, so e-mails may not be read or there may not be a reply.

Tool Man

John can use PDA's to use it as an address book that is a lot smaller and also a lot easier to find contacts and their address's. Also the PDA will be a lot more organized and can be used to set dates, also the PDA can be used as a calculator so their is no need for John to carry an extra calculator.

GPS: John can use GPS to replace his map books which can take time to look for your route, the GPS can navigate for John so he does not have to worry about navigating. Also the GPS is a lot more accurate than road maps, the GPS also can find the fastest routes to the location, missing massive traffic.

Laptop: John can use a laptop to have an electronic catalog of the tools he is selling, also the laptop can help and speed up the admin he does in his office on Fridays.

Software: John using software will decrease the amount of time it takes him to do his admin also it makes his letters he is sending out if any a lot more professional and up to date.

Mobile phone: John using a mobile phone means that john will not have to carry numerous small coins to use pay phones, also john can use this mobile phone anywhere he needs to rather than having to find a payphone to use.

Internet: Using the internet means that john can get up to date with any details he needs to no e.g. road news etc. Also it means that he can use it to listen to online music.

What possible disadvantages are there for him in employing a lot of ICT? The ICT is not guarantied to work 100% of the time, it could fail at times making it harder for him to work, and also using a lot of ICT means that some of it needs to be fully charged up before he leaves each day.

Yahoo mail

Today I logged onto my E-mail account with Yahoo-email, the logging in was easy and quickly loaded up my emails. Next to my inbox was my avatar which can be good because it makes the webpage more interesting and have some interaction. However the website can become slower and take time to process links because their is animation/interaction.

Online entertainment

Online entertainment technologies you have used in the last three months.
• Nintendo Wii online
• Gaming websites
• Online video websites

The purpose of the technology is to provide entertainment for the users, it is targeted at anyone, the films and games may have ages on e.g. 18 which targets at an age. The Nintendo wii is enhanced by being online because you can use lot of online services that the wii provides that can make the entertainment a lot better. The current limitations are that the wii cannot use IM software and cannot run all the games and films on it. The Nintendo Wii does’ not fulfil its potential because it cannot provide all the online entertainment the users want.

Investigate dowloading goods and services

A list of items that me and my family have downloaded of the internet;

• Music
• Movies
• Games
• Images
• Documents
• Software

The reasons for downloading these items is because;

• Cheaper
• Quicker
• Can get it from the internet
• Easier than going to shops
• Downloads directly to computer
• Can be free

The problems with downloading these items;

• Can contain virus’s
• May not be downloading what you think you are
• Can be illegal
• Can take a lot of memory
• Sometimes you need software to download the items
• Can take along time

Investigate government services online

Research the local and national governmental services that can be undertaken online in the UK. Use the Directgov website as a starting point.

Information services: Directgov.co.uk website provides a lot of information for the user, it provides information like the benefits you can get. All sorts of information is displayed on this website from education and learning to government, citizens and rights, all this information could be very useful for any user that uses this website.

Online reporting and advice: The website provides some advice on some subjects, the Directgov website provides advice on the citizens advice bureau.

Online Booking: The website provides web pages were you can book your driving tests, the webpage provides a lot of information about booking tests for either a car or motorcycle, it also provides links for more information and provides a link to the booking page.

Online Payments: The website provides some information on how to pay online but has many different headings which lead onto other things to do with payment which may be irrelevant to what you are looking for.

Usefulness to consumers;

1. Information services.

2. Online booking.

3. Online advice.

4. Online Payments.

The statement made may be incorrect because, the statements says the government hopped that they would save that much not saying that they have saved that much. However money will be saved from moving all their services online.

Research Online Education

You are an experienced consumer of education. Find five different types of online education on the internet. Rank them in order of how best you would learn via each, and give a short explanation of why this is so.

1.http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/16/- this is top because it has a lot of interactive things to do and this helps me learn.

2.http://www.bayhouselearning.co.uk/- this is second because it has a lot of text documents on the subjects i am taking and are relevant to my education.

3.http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/- this is third because it has also has a lot of videos and text but may not always be relevant to my subjects.

4.http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/- This is fourth because it does have a lot of text documents on subjects but is only text.

5.http://post16.reonline.org.uk/tt_nframe.php?http://www.guidestud.org/Lotus_Sutra/Lotus1.htm-This is fifth because it has a lot of text documents on what to learn but is only text nothing else so would help me 100%

The best source is www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/16 because this website uses alot of educational tools such as using videos, games and audio thing to teach the students.

Use a Learning Object

Evaluate this as a way of helping you to learn.

The use of using videos online is a good way of learning because some people will be visual and audio learners which make it a lot easier for those people to learning, also using videos etc makes the learning more interesting and makes the students interact with their learning a lot more.

Use a Learning Object

Evaluate this as a way of helping you to learn.

The use of using videos online is a good way of learning because some people will be visual and audio learners which make it a lot easier for those people to learning, also using videos etc makes the learning more interesting and makes the students interact with their learning a lot more.

Macromedia virtual classroom

This is a really good way of learning, you can use it from home and can ask questions instantly to your teacher, e-learning also makes it possible to learn about subjects you cannot learn at school, also you can learn if you are at any age which can help if you are not able to go to night classes at college ect. The disadvantages are that the teaching can only happen if you have this piece of software, also you have to log into these classrooms on time.

Use a simulation

The website is good for its purpose because, the website gives a step by step guide on how to dissect a frog, the step by step guide is very good and the website fits its purpose, the website also gives an interactive side where you have to choose how and were to dissect the frog this gives a lot of practice to the users with out dissecting a lot of frogs. This teaches that online simulation is very good in educating someone because the simulation educates someone virtually which is cost effective and you can modify the simulations.

Explore Learning objects and simulations

The website is very good for its purpose because it shows lots of information about what it is meant for. Their is a lot of interactive components that make the website very interesting. The interactive side of the website makes the users want to use it a lot more and they get more into the website rather that it all being text based. The lessons it teaches about online education is that, online education can be accessed from anywhere by anyone if they have an internet browser. Also the website teaches that internet education can be trustworthy and good but a lot can be bad because it may not be trust worthy information.

Weather Report

The weather report for friday is sunny the weather report is correct, i do not think that the weather report would be must more accurate if I decided to pay for it because the weather report will not be made to be incorrect because it will lose viewers for its website if it is incorrect.

Online Banking

Purpose of online banking

The purpose of online banking is to make it a lot more easier for the users and the workers of the bank. The banks can be open 24/7 online so no works will need to be working late nights, also the website will be open on holidays all of the year. Also the website is to give any assistance to any one who would want to join their bank or for anyone who has any queries on their bank.

The abbey banking manages to fulfil these purposes of online banking by providing a good website that has good security, and provides a good online banking system. The website is very helpful for all the users, however it is a bit cluttered on the homepage and can confuse some people.

The major advantages of using online banking is that it is literally open 24/7, the online service also provides quick and easy access to your bank account. There is no waiting in line to do your banking, the online bank can also be clearer for some people than going into the bank, the website provides a lot of information that is easy to access.

Online banking can be improved by having a lot higher security, online banking can be quite risky and a lot of people have been victims to online fraud. Also online banking should be made a lot simpler, the online banking can be quite hard to find what you are looking for, which it should be made a lot simpler.

Weather Report

Tuesdays weather report was to have sunny intervals, however the day had a few sunny intervals and was very cloudy the weather report was slightly wrong.

Weather Report

Mondays weather report was for the day to have sunny intervails, the day was cloudy but did have a few sunny intervals so the weather report was correct.

Monday, 22 September 2008

Real time weather report

Monday- Sunny Intervals
Tuesday-Sunny Intervals
Wednesday-Light rain
Thursday-Sunny Intervals
Friday-Sunny

These are the BBC weather report predictions for the 5 days, the weather report for Monday is predicted to have sunny intervals. Personally I think that the weather report will be correct because the BBC is a trustworthy site and doesn't tend to charge customers.

eBay

eBay
The purpose of the site is to auction off anything other sellers want to. Sellers are anyone with an eBay account, they can sell anything they want new or old. Also shops now tend to sell there items on eBay now. Anyone can be a buyer on eBay as long as they have an account.
The website meets its objective very well, its objective is too make money buy letting users buy and sell things on their website which they are doing very well. The benefits of using this service is that many items will be a lot cheaper than they would be in shops or other Internet sites. Also with eBay you can find most things you want to buy rather than having to go to other shops to buy multiple items. The disadvantages are that the sellers may not be trustworthy so items may not arrive, some buyers or sellers can be using a fake account or hacked into someone else's account so internet security is a problem on eBay. It is so successful as a shopping model because it is charging people to use its internet site to advertise and sell their products, it is also so successful because the site is world wide their is an eBay site for almost every country.

Gosport to Tottenham Court Road in London

To get to Tottenham Court Road in London by car from Gosport the trip has been planned to take about 2hours and 13minutes, the distance to Tottenham Court Road in London is 97 miles. This journey is planned if the person was leaving today, between 11:20-12:20. The cost will be for petrol which is on average £1.11 per liter the car will use about 13 liters so the pertol will cost £14.31, and congesstion charge which is around £8-£10. The source that I used for this information was: http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/inc/planner_places_redirect.jsp
To get to Tottenham Court Road in London by Bus and Train from Gosport the trip has been planned to take around, the distance to Tottenham Court Road in London is 97 miles. This journey is planned for the person to leave on the no87 bus at 11:40 and arrive at Fareham railway service at 12:25. Then the person should get the 12:35 train from Fareham railway, this should take around 2hours and 50minutes and arrive at Tottenham Court Road station at 15:25.
Prices for this way of journey is,
Bus: £5.00
Train:£30.40
Total: £35.40
In conclusion the quicker and cheeper way to get to this destionation is to go by car however the train and bus does not require a car or yourself to drive. So looking at both of these ways I suggest to take the car.

Tsunami 2004

The Tsunami in 2004 gives examples of presenting information indifferent ways by the fact that people were sending off E-mails, texts, making calls using websites etc just to present information. Information was also shared quickly through types of communication, people would be calling home to share their information which then will be passed around. Things like greater interaction between organisations became shown, the BBC was setting up a charity hot line etc to collect donations for the victims and the buildings of the tsunami which the money was passed on directly. Virtual communities were made on the tsunami which brought communities together via the Internet, people would be discussing the events of the tsunami and trying to help the victims of the event. Modern communication services were used rather than the older ones because the phone lines would be blocked up with all the outgoing and incoming calls so text messages would be able to get through every time there was less than 100% of calls a few more texts would be sent out. Each service was useful because information was being passed around to relatives through websites, texts, emails and phone calls so the services was very useful so information could be passed around.

Web sites I used.

Digital Divide

Using google groups to find groups on digital divide is not very useful there is not many up to date groups and not many groups on what i am looking for. Also the groups tend to give you links to other pages that then give you more links to other pages etc. How ever i do think that google groups will be useful if you are looking for a group that will be popular e.g cars.

SMS, IM and E-MAIL

SMS is a good messaging service it is quick and is sent to any mobile phone you want it to be sent to if you have the number and also you can send some messages to land line phones. SMS is good because all you need to send and receive SMS is a mobile phone, there is a big limit on how many words you can use. How ever the problem with SMS is that it can be very expensive to use and can cost a lot if you are not careful on how many texts you are sending. Also anyone who has managed to get your number can text you which can be dangerous if that person is impersonating someone.

IM is a excellent messaging service it is quick and can contact anyone in the world if you have their IM address. Through IM you cannot only send messages but also play games, have a group conversation, send files and use web cams and Mic's etc, Also most IM's don't cost anything. The problem with IM is that you need to have an IM address and you cannot talk to anyone who is offline. Also things like viruses and people like paedophiles can easily impersonate and manipulate anyone who they have the IM address of.

E-MAIL is a good messaging service, you can send almost anything in an email to anyone who has got an email account. Their is not just one website that does emails, so email accounts are very easy to get and create. Sending emails is completely free and very quick and effective way of sending information to other people. Most email accounts will have things like a tool bar on top with font size change and spell check. However when sending an email the person receiving the email can only read it when they are logged onto their email account. Also some emails with big files attached to them can take along time to download and can contain viruses.

Wii

Been on the Wii and the internet services they provide are good, they provide things like up-dates on weather forecasts and latest news services free, however they also provide a good internet channel but you have to to pay for the channel. It is good and cheap to buy the internet channel only problem with it is there is not a quicker way for me to type other than using the wii-mote which takes alot of time for long sentances.
